someone pointed out that cops go through about 110 hours of firearms training and 8 hours of conflict management training on average

for comparison, to be licensed as a hairdresser you have to put in between 1500 and 2000 hours of training

Hairdressers are braver than the troops tbh

@SeanAloysiusOBrien oh yeah. my sister is a cosmetologist and had to take more abuse recognition, conflict de-escalation, and chemistry than she did like... Cutting hair. And far more than a cop has to take.

@SeanAloysiusOBrien like, I just want to underline that my state thinks somebody who cuts hair must be able to disarm a conflict & recognize domestic abuse... But a cop? Naw man they can make you minced meat and it's MY fault because I spooked em.

@SeanAloysiusOBrien even my yearly “for people who don’t actually have to do any of these dangerous things (just be around them sometimes)” safety training is 12 hours god

@SeanAloysiusOBrien I remember the first time I realized how little it took to become a cop. There was a guy who was tangential to my core friend group in community college and one day he just announced he was joining the force. Just like that. And then a bit later, he was in.

That was the inciting moment for me, realizing that just anyone who didn't know what else they wanted to do could just go become a cop in a few months.

@SeanAloysiusOBrien 8 hours conflict management training? Isn't conflict management like half of their job?

@SeanAloysiusOBrien i was today years old when i was made aware i have more gun handling and training hours than an average police officer has holy fuck.
