uspol, reflecting on a recent conversation with a centrist

centrists, 2016: it's fine. he'll probably tack to the center so he doesn't get impeached.

centrists, 2019: my god. there's going to be a revolution.

re: uspol

@garbados Honestly I think the US is one of the safer places to be, except Canada. Pretty much everywhere is going to have the same problems we're facing, a lot of them /because/ of us, but with the added burden of lots of population movement.

We're kinda isolated and underpopulated, and in a big picture way, that's an advantage.

re: uspol

@emsenn what kind of advantage is being systematically excluded from economic participation, healthcare, education...? living under the gun of untouchable fascists? those macro concerns are no concern at all when you're dead, when they have already killed too many of your friends

re: uspol

@emsenn i just. sure. fascism is on the rise everywhere. but, for example, germany is not a collapsing superpower. new zealand is not a collapsing superpower.

re: uspol

@garbados I think viewing this as the collapse of a hegemony is a bit myopic, when there are similar collapses in many nations right now, in addition to our diminishing ability to rely on our climate. This is, even in the opinion of the shareholder reports, a shifting of our global order into a plutocracy that is able to allocate a diminishing pool of natural resources. I don't think there's a place you can move to avoid it. At least here there's fewer people.

re: uspol

@emsenn let me put it another way:

in the US, a typical end for someone with mental health issues like mine is to simply be executed by a cop who encounters me having an episode while they are in a bad mood.

that's not the typical outcome in a number of countries. we can talk about the macro concerns but i'm worried about the basic shit like feeding myself, having a roof, keeping bullets out of my insides, etc., and there are considerable meaningful differences on those fronts between the US and places to which my family and i might emigrate.

re: uspol

@garbados And what I am saying is, not for long.

re: uspol

@emsenn hmm so it's myopic to say the empire is in freefall but not myopic to say that within a negligible span everywhere on earth will be hell on earth. ok.

re: uspol

@garbados Look I can tell that my reply wasn't taken well to begin with, but, yes: one is looking at the empire, and one is looking at the earth. If your immediate community feels unsafe, you can likely find a safer domestic one in the short term, but it is unlikely that anyplace will be "safe" in the sense most folk have gotten used to within 5-10 years.

re: uspol

@emsenn it's just hard for me to understand what you're saying except as "give up now"

re: uspol

@garbados It's not "give up or flight" instinct, is it?

re: uspol

@June @emsenn sorry. i've been under a lot of additional financial stress lately and it's got me very actively terrified, more than i am usually terrified. my family and i have put years of thought and work into preparing to emigrate and i have a tendency to get touchy about it.

re: uspol

@garbados Ahh - you can perhaps see how your "anyone wanna help *upside down smiley*" might be read the same as the dozen other posts I saw tonight from "impeachment? i'm moving to europe!"

I don't mean to add to the terror or stress, I just... genuinely don't see anyplace else as having a better chance at providing me security past these next few years. @June

re: uspol

@garbados @emsenn good luck if that’s the route you choose, if not there’s people here who love you too and we’ll fight together
