Star Trek Discovery S2E10 thoughts

The first run through of this episode was too much for my tired Ferengi brain. So I'm rewatching now and I'll try to live-toot it, we'll see how that goes.

= The Funeral =
A very thoughtful way to send off a character on the show and does make it seem like it will be final. I wonder about deleting her data, I suppose they didn't want to leave her floating in space with her them.

The little unity of the augmented was nice too.

... then Saru sings!
That's different!

= The Time Travelling AI =
Ok, here's it is

Burnam : "Section 31 created Control, and some future version of it is here and Airiam is gone."

Pike: "Let's star twith everything we know"

Burnam: "The AI is from the Future. It infected Airiam and forced her to copy some of the Sphere data into Control, so that Control could evolve. We stopped her before that could happen."

ok fine. but then...

Admiral: "How did this Section 31 program, designed to eliminate threats become the threat?"

They are conflating the two.

Spock: "Time Travel."

sure but..

Spock: "The one variable we cannot possible predict is the future. The future AI is built on technology of which we have no understanding."

Now, that sounds good. But if you think about it doesn't even make grammatical sense. "The Future" is not a variable, it's the unknown progression of all variables.

Now Saru is saying they destroyed the Section 31 station and Airiam so they hope the future AI infection is contained...which they can't possibly know.

Tilley: then Tilley comes in and tells us about the file left in Airiam's datastore, it just says Project Dadaelus and has Burnam's bio-neural signature. That means the red angel info was in Airiam's head the whole time. Is this a clue for them to figure out or a flag to identify Burnam as a threat?

= Burnam and Leland =
Main points:
Leland : "they had a theory that technological leaps were due to time travel"

Burnam : " nu uh..."

Leland: " I didn't believe them eithter...until they built the suite."

What does that *mean*? Did someone from the future bring them the suit?

They stole a time crystal...the klingons tracked it to Doctori Alpha "where a star was about to go supernova releasing a massive amount of energy."

He doesn't say exactly why the supernova was relevant but I assume it's because they need massive energy to run the suit.

What is it about Star Trek writers and supernovae? They just think it's something you can harness, catch, stop, outrun, never outrun...oh well.

= Project Dadaelus =
Right, now we get the second (third?) big reveal scene of Section 31 explaining how they knew all along what the red angel was, because they built it.

Leland: "The suit was on the verge of being tested when it was destroyed by Klingon spies."

Then they agree to build the mousetrap S31 has been planning all along.

=== in sickbay ===
Spock: "We must assume the events I forsaw blah blah death blah are a result of Control evolving and achieving consciousness."

So this is the first time they explain it directly.

== Best line of the episode ==
Spock: "I do I'd been there when you struck him...I believe I would have found the moment...satisfying."

@quark I assume you reached the end of the episode and saw who's the Red Angel. What do you think?

Star Trek Discovery S2E10 thoughts

@NetMassimo I was surprised, so that's good. I actually like it better than their theory about it being Burnam. The paradoxes wouldn't have worked out, if it was really her wouldn't she *remember* that they'd done all this and tried to catch her? Being her mom means the motivation still makes sense but no paradox is needed. Looking forward to next week.

Star Trek Discovery S2E10 thoughts

@quark indeed Michael being the Red Angel meant going quite to the extreme with paradoxes. I'm curious to see how they develop the story-arc after the revelation as well.

Star Trek Discovery S2E10 thoughts

@quark they still need to master harnessing energy from stars the way #DoctorWho #Timelords do ;)
tardis.fandom.com/wiki/Eye_of_

«The Eye was created by suspending time around an exploding star in the act of becoming a black hole, harnessing the potential energy of a collapse that would never occur. According to the Eleventh Doctor, you would "rip the star from its orbit, [and] suspend it in a permanent state of decay."»

Star Trek Discovery S2E10 thoughts

@FiXato you know? at least they take it seriously, and since they can rescale sizes it's not implausible with their physics.

Star Trek Discovery S2E10 thoughts

@quark yeah I thought the same thing—clumsy line, especially for spock

Star Trek Discovery S2E10 thoughts

@quark it sounds like we're dealing with a grandfather paradox here...

control evolved based on sphere data, which it got because it evolved from sphere data?
