Allusion

I spotted this hairy woodpecker while I was in the kitchen so I grabbed my camera. I was only able to get photos through the windows (and window screens). By the time I got outside, it had gone around to the other side of the tree, then flew away.

A bird with a white belly, black wings with white speckles, black-and-white striped head and a bit of red in the back of the head. It has a longish black beak. It's hanging on a gnarl on the the side of a maple tree, peering at it as if calculating the next strike.
The same bird on a different gnarl. It's looking up like maybe it's seen me. Its head is turned so the red spots are almost hidden. There is some lichen and moss on the tree's bark.
